Race Roundup: Early August 2019

While there might not be a ton of races and activity to report for this week, these two are absolute beasts in and of themselves! Week after week you see teammates running 5k’s, 10k’s upward to 50k’s and 100k’s; you all can’t be stopped and this week we got two ladies that are mile eaters, preferring races that most of us balk at. That said…

On the 10th Marie Gryszowka took on the Sweltering Summer Ultra put on by the fine folks that brought us the Vegan Power 25k/50k, the BURCS. Per their website, “Come experience summer in Pittsfield and enjoy music, food, and friendship as you test your limits. Run 1 lap or 150! Proceeds to benefit Moments House, a non-profit organization in Pittsfield, Massachusetts that provides those with a cancer diagnosis and their friends, families, and caregivers with complementary care.” The BURCS community doesn’t only care a great deal about their racers but the communities they are a part of. Not only is Marie a bigtime SHVP teammate but you can always find her involved in these BURCS races either behind the scenes at an aid station or running lap after lap after lap of the Sweltering Summer. Marie says, “My least favorite things… running flat and circles but I show up every year anyway. When some of your best/favorite friends not only run but RD the event you suck it up and get loopy. Only 364 days till next year.” Way to get “loopy” Marie!!

Much to her chagrin, Sam LeBlanc also took on a race on the 10th; the TARC Summer Classic 40 Miler. Ironically, this race was six years to the date from when she ran 4 miles for the first time; this one was 10x that and she crushed it. Sam came in 3rd overall and 1st for women. She ALSO set the course record for women!! As humbles as Sam is, she says “it was the perfect 100-mile training run and my mental toughness was surely tested today. The best part of running a looped course with lots of out and backs is that allows you to see a whole mix of inspiring runners and gives you that extra push to keep doing your best!” Yeah, training…. I balk at that!! Amazing job!!
